Laila knew in her heart that marriage should be for love, not for duty. Her union with Sheik Jabril would help improve and maintain political stability in her country, as well as bring the people of her province honor and pride. And Jabril was certainly easy on the eyes. He was tall, built like an Olympian, and exuded power and masculinity. But the man was a player of the worst sort, with mistresses all over the world! She realizes that she cannot say no to the Sheik of Surisia, so she respectfully requests that they treat their marriage like the business arrangement that it is. His response? He kisses her! Through that kiss, he demonstrates that he will not accept anything less than her full acquiescence, but she also discovers that his passion and physical presence stir something within her that she cannot control.

Their first public event together convinces Jabril that he made an excellent choice for a wife. She is not only stunningly beautiful, but smart and socially adept. She will be a worthy partner to rule his kingdom, and to share his bed! Her trembling response to his touch excites him, but her suggestion that they essentially live separate lives confounds and amuses him. There is no way he will allow that. The intensity of their first kiss lingers in his memory and he will not relent until he has experienced all she can give. He wants her in his bed, every night. And he will have her!

I feel as though The Sheik's Defiant Fiancee is a pulp novel whose intended audience is men from the late 50's. It's not a question of the Sheik being misogynistic - because he is, it's more about how namby pamby the Fiancee is. Defiant? When? With one look, one touch, she is helpless to resist him, even though she tries ever so hard to do so. Believe me, she tried a lot, and it got old quickly.

Below is a spoilery cliff note to this novel.

The Sheik Defiant Fiancée edition by Elizabeth Lennox Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I didn't notice how short it was when I bought it, so as I'm reading, I'm trying to figure out where the story was going. It was very simple and straightforward girl doesn't want boy, girl meets boy, they sleep together, they both fall in love, and get married, all in a very small number of pages. So I was waiting for the big plot twist that starts the second act of the story. When boy gets hurt, I started to get interested because I realized that the logical next step was that his cousin, who'd already been portrayed as a womanizer, would be behind it, trying to orchestrate a coup. I looked forward to seeing how these two handled the political machinations and dangers to come. And then I tried to turn the page, and realized there weren't any more. For some inexplicable reason, the writer thought that was a complete story. It was an introduction to a story. The first act minus the twist at the end which propels it into the second act. It had the potential to be an interesting book, if she'd bothered to write the rest of it, but without the meat of the story, what is here is just an insipid excerpt.
She believes the worst about him, but agrees to marry him for the sake of her domineering father with political aspirations. He decides she's the one for him because he met her once and he read her files. She wants a formal, loveless marriage. He wants lots of hot sex. Every time she tries to push him away, he forces himself on her. And they both lived happily ever after. Way too much sex, especially in a short novella. Too much confusion between sexual chemistry and love (in reading several of her books, I'm becoming convinced that Elizabeth Lennox doesn't know the difference). All that being said, I gave it 5 stars because Lennox is a remarkably good writer that makes you identify with her characters. She might be morally and emotionally confused, but she writes the garbage she writes very well.
I enjoyed the other two stories loosely connected with this one so I thought I'd give it a try. I found that out of the three that I wasn't as enamored with this one.

Mostly it was the heroine. At first I liked her and respected her stance about her upcoming arranged marriage. She heard rumors that her soon to be husband, the country's ruler, was a philanderer and didn't want to go beyond a business like arrangement since he wouldn't be faithful. But then when she confronts him and he tells her that she has the wrong end of the stick and has him mixed up with his cousin, she refuses to believe it and spends almost the rest of the book in denial. Denial of attraction and feelings even lying about it while pushing the guy away. I get it on a certain level and understand that she's just scared, but it still got old and made no sense because it was one of those 'I'll deny with words, but my expressions and actions don't match and I'm fooling no one' type things. In the end, when it takes a crisis to get her in gear, I was like 'finally'.

I liked the couple together and the overall plot was good so it turned out mostly enjoyable.
I seem to be on a roll! This is the third good book I've read in a while. I had not joined the sheiks thing, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have read historical and I wasn't ready to do the harem and/or first wife thing. This was a good read with the insecurities of the bride being addressed by her fiance a very loving and attentive manner. A cool hero, while appearing to have a "don't sweat the small stuff attitude", still did not just ignore her concerns. She had enough strength and confidence in herself that although she had fears/concerns, she also had a sense of what she would and would not find acceptable. Very good read. I will look for other books by Elizabeth Lennox, and this book joins my 're-reads.
